Penelope’s Fitness Quick Fix

If you missed the boat on bikini season this year, don’t worry, Penelope has got a Fitness Quick Fix that will get you back in shape almost instantly.

Though she is youthful and vibrant (particularly in her color), she has been around the block a few times. Which is exactly what she advocates for you. Get outside! Not only are the outdoors a great place to exercise, nature is scientifically proven to lift the spirits. Nature can make us kinder, happier, and more creative, according to a new study from Berkeley. “Scientists are beginning to find evidence that being in nature has a profound impact on our brains and our behavior, helping us to reduce anxiety, brooding, and stress, and increase our attention capacity, creativity, and our ability to connect with other people.” *

We are healthier – physically and emotionally – when we interact with nature. But even beyond nature’s benefits as extolled by Thoreau and John Muir, studies show that we tend to stick with outdoor fitness routines more often than we do indoor workouts.

And how about Vitamin D?! Called the sunshine vitamin, D is produced in your skin as a response to sunlight. It helps us our bodies regulate the absorption of calcium, helps us resist disease, and is essential to immune system function.

That’s great, you say. But where’s my fitness quick fix? Penelope will be the first one to tell you that there is no quick fix for fitness, no magic bullet. All the online articles you see about “30-Minutes to Fitness,” and “5 Fitness Quick Fixes for anything that Jiggles – Got flabby abs? Do planks. Got jiggly underarms? Do tricep dips!” and “Belly Blast off Fitness” miss the point. The quickest way to fitness is to get some exercise you enjoy. And keep getting it.

Happiness is one of the foundations of good health – and fitness. Find an exercise routine that you like. You’ll stick with it and it will make you happy. How do you find the right routine? There is definitely not a one-size-fits-all answer. But ask yourself these questions. Your answers will give you some guidance toward a fitness plan you can stick with for good.

  • What are your goals? When you know what your target is, it will be easier to hit.
  • Are you training your whole body or just spot training a group of muscles? For greater wellness, train your whole body. Work on balance, stamina, breath. Be kind to your joints and your bones.
  • Does your training fit your schedule? If you cannot find a way to fit your workout regime naturally and easily into your daily schedule, you are likely to fall off the wagon. Be realistic and choose something you can actually do in the time you have.
  • Does your fitness routine bubble over into other parts of your life? If you choose a program you love, chances are good you’ll want to practice more often and even share it with friends.
