What does it take to be a Sofi Awards Finalist at the New York Fancy Food Show?

Innovation, excellent ingredients, great flavor, good taste, determination, hard work, and devoted customers…

Blossom Water is thrilled that its Grapefruit Lilac is a sofi Awards finalist at this year’s Specialty Food Association Fancy Food Show in New York City. Winners will be announced June 30th!

Sofi stands for “specialty outstanding food innovation.” To be selected is a huge honor. From among the 2,500+ specialty foods competing, only 125 finalists were chosen.

Initially when the sofi Aawards were first presented in 1972, there were only two awards categories: Outstanding Domestic Product and Outstanding Imported Product. Today awards categories include appetizers and baked goods, cheese or dairy, cold beverage, condiment, confection, cookie, cooking sauce, cracker…all the way down the specialty food line to vinegar. There are 32 award categories in all.

Products are judged on these factors:

  • Taste
  • Quality
  • Innovation
  • Ingredient Profile
  • Merchandisability
  • Best in its Class

“The judges are top professionals in the specialty food industry and include specialty food retailers, supermarket buyers, natural food merchants, mass marketers, chefs, caterers, journalists and culinary educators. They spend eight full days tasting and evaluating all entries to come up with a list of Finalists across all categories…Judging takes place over two days, supervised by an independent auditor.” (
